Manu Dharma Shastra is considered to be the most authoritative smriti among the Hindu dharma shastras. However, it is also regarded as the most corrupted and manipulated text in Hinduism. It has been used to justify caste discrimination, gender oppression and religious intolerance by some groups. Many scholars have pointed out the contradictions and interpolations in the text that are against the core principles of Hinduism as found in the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads. The British colonialists also used the Manu Dharma Shastra as a basis for codifying Hindu law and imposing their own agenda on the Indian society.
